The 1st International Biennial of Theatre of the University of São Paulo: Incendiary Realities was inspired by the myth of Prometheus, who’d stolen fire from the gods and given it to humans, teaching them the arts of civilization and the means to survive.

The curators searched nationally and internationally for some of the contemporary theater experiences which are committed to reducing the gap between arts and daily life, and surpassing the challenges posed by their historical, social and political contexts by questioning the ways we see and occupy the world. Thus, the programme includes artists who symbolize the youth of the newly-created men in the Promethean myth and who reflect the incendiary realities of their existences and stories by challenging the prevailing aesthetic standards.

While searching for different performing syntaxes, the selected productions set fire and cause short circuits to the established ways of doing theatre. Nationally, we have chosen companies associated with universities with performing arts degrees and prioritized youth groups whose productions have already been recognized by the critic due to their qualities. Internationally, we have selected theatrical productions from countries far from the centrality of Western hegemonic thought – which has already been quite assimilated into Brazilian artistic productions –, so that they could bring opportunities, based on different aesthetic and cultural references, to ignite the dialogue with the national scene and the ongoing widespread research in performing arts.

The Theatre of the University of São Paulo (TUSP) is immensely grateful to all participants, collaborators and partners who have made possible the University of São Paulo’s I International Biennial of Theatre: Incendiary Realities, and reinforces its 2014 plans to bring part of this programme to other university campuses where we act.

May consciousness and the creative impulse, symbolized by the Promethean fire, bring new provision to the enjoyment of such theatrical experiences, beyond the geographical, cognitive and sensitive boundaries that approach and tear us apart.
