"Active Learning Materials for Analytical Chemistry Education"

Abstract

The traditional basis for teaching is the textbook however, professors frequently complain that students do not read their texts, while students lament their cost. When asked to find a piece of information, most of us now turn to the Internet first instead of the library. The availability of digital resources is having a tremendous impact on teaching and learning, as well as on the practice of analytical chemistry. Creative uses of electronic resources can provide a true enhancement to the educational process.

This presentation builds on experience with the Analytical Sciences Digital Library (www.asdlib.org), a collection of peer-reviewed, web-based resources related to chemical measurements and instrumentation and efforts to evolve ASDL to an interactive and engaged community of practitioners. A recent focus of these efforts has been the development of active learning resources for use in the teaching of analytical chemistry. Examples will be presented from materials designed for the teaching of separations. A contextual-based learning module based on flamingo die off events around Lake Nakuru, Kenya will also be described.

This resource, available at http://www.asdlib.org/lakeNakuru.php, introduces the problem and leads the students to think about how they might experimentally address a possible cause of the flamingo deaths – organochlorine pesticide toxicity. Students are asked guiding questions and provided with resource materials to allow them to address the steps in the chemical analysis: obtaining a representative sample, preparing the sample for analysis, separation of components by gas chromatography, detection by mass spectrometry and validation of the analytical method.

To enable other instructors to make use of these materials, an instructor’s guide provides the answers to the questions, and tips about how the materials might be used.
