Museu de Zoologia
The Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo –
MZ – holds the largest zoological collection in South America
with approximately 8 million specimens. It is an important reference
for the study of Neotropical Region biodiversity. The collections
include almost all zoological groups. Currently researches are being
carried out on six groups: mollusks, crustaceans, insects, fishes,
reptiles, and mammals. The MZ keeps intense contact with other similar
institutions from Brazil and other countries, both receiving scientists
and sending experts abroad to conduct research, and to exchange
zoological specimens.
The aim of the public long term exhibition is to give the visitor
a clear idea of the research activities developed at the MZ. The
exhibition is entitled "Research in Zoology: biodiversity according
to the zoologist" and was conceived as a continuous circuit
divided into four sections, shown in a linear sequence. Even though
more than 1,000 specimens are shown at the exhibition, the MZ collections
are much larger, with specimens carefully preserved so that research
on them can be successfully put into practice. Visits to the collections
may be especially arranged for small groups.
The museum also presents temporary exhibitions in two galleries.
The exhibits receive approximately 60,000 visitors per year, mainly
students of the first and second grades.
