NUTAU/USP – Nucleus of Research in Technology of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Sao Paulo, related to the Pro-rectory of Research, has been promoting, since 1996, biannual International Seminars on issues of foremost interest in the field of the Technology of Architecture and Urbanism and, more recently, Design. Previous seminars dealt with the following themes:
In 2012, for the first time in its history of sixteen years of continuous realizations, the 9th NUTAU International Seminar was held at the Imigrantes Exhibition Center in Sao Paulo, alongside with three international fairs (FESQUA, VITECH and ARCTECH) - all related to the technological field of Architecture, Urbanism and Design -, thanks to the support of the CIPA Group.
Our common objective was to forward to the general public the results of the research activities carried out in the academic realm and focusing this specific field, and creating a more direct link between basic and applied research, in the benefit of all people, by means of large events in the area of the technology of Civil Construction.
The very theme of the Seminar was directed to the issue of Sustainable Collective Housing, a concern both of the State and the Market, and to the experiences in this field in the five BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which, together, house 40% of the world's total population. More than forty specialists and researchers used the space of the Seminar to bring forward their ideas about this general theme, and NUTAU 2012 was widely promoted to the visitors of the three fairs, with a public estimated in approximately thirty thousand visitors during the four days of the event.
These annals bring together the different contributions made by the national and international guests, as well as those by the national researchers who have been studying the important issue of adequate housing, as well as other aspects related to it. We hope, as we thank all those collaborators who helped in the realization of this Seminar, that their current divulgence might help other researchers and our local governments in facing the challenges and difficulties that surround the housing and urban issues in Brazil and in other countries within the BRICS community.
