Cynoscion jamaicensis (Vaillant & Bocourt, 1883)

(Sciaenidae, Perciformes)

No Atlântico ocidental ocorre do Caribe até a Argentina, da costa até 100 m de profundidade. Vive em fundos de areia e ou lama, atingindo 50 cm de comprimento (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Menezes et al., 2003; Bernardes et al., 2005). Alimenta-se de peixes e/ou presas pelágicas (Soares et al.; 2008).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: oblique-round (58%), rounded (42%). Dorsal edge: entire (49%), sinuate to entire (29%), lobed to sinuate (12%), lobed (8%). Ventral edge: entire (45%), sinuate to entire (28%), lobed (16%), lobed to sinuate (9%). Profile: plane-convex (82%), biconvex (18%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening pseudo-ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium lateral, cauda bent tubular (68%), strongly curved tubular (28%), slightly curved tubular (4%).
