Ocorre no Atlântico ocidental, da Carolina do Norte até o sul do Brasil, nas Bermudas e no Caribe. Atinge 41 cm. É a espécie do gênero que habita águas mais profundas, tendo sido capturada até quase 400m. (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Figueiredo et al, 2002; Bernardes et al., 2005).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic to lanceolated (57%), elliptic (43%). Anterior region: lanceolated (57%), peaked (43%). Posterior region: rounded (57%), angled-round (29%), flattened (14%). Dorsal edge: lobed to sinuate. Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate. Profile: concave-convex (86%), plane-convex (14%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular.
