Harengula clupeola (Cuvier, 1829)

(Clupeidae, Clupeiformes)

Popularmente denominada sardinha-cascuda, ocorre no oceano Atlântico ocidental, da Flórida ao Estado de São Paulo. Atinge, em média, 17 cm de comprimento, sendo encontrada em águas costeiras e estuarinas. A alimentação é baseada em organismos planctônicos, principalmente zooplâncton (FIGUEIREDO e MENEZES, 1978; FROESE e PAULY, 2013).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic (91%), elliptic to lanceolated (9%). Anterior region: peaked (91%), lanceolated (9%). Posterior region: rounded (78%), angled-round (22%). Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (89%), lobed to sinuate (11%). Ventral edge: dentate to sinuate (44%), lobed to sinuate (35%), sinuate to entire (18%), dentate to lobed (4%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation slightly ascending (64%), horizontal (36%), opening ostial, morphology pseudo-archaesulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda elliptic (44%), round-oval (40%), slightly curved tubular (16%).
