Ocorre das Antilhas e América Central (Costa Rica) até o litoral de Santa Catarina (Brasil). É encontrada em águas litorâneas geralmente em profundidades inferiores a 50 m, sobre fundos de lama e areia e também em estuários. Atinge 30 cm e alimenta-se de peixes e/ou presas pelágicas (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Soares et al.; 2008).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: flattened (85%), rounded (15%). Dorsal edge: entire (83%), sinuate to entire (15%), lobed (3%). Ventral edge: sinuate to entire (53%), entire (33%), lobed to entire (13%), lobed (3%). Profile: biconvex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median (65%), supramedian (35%), orientation ascending (78%), horizontal (23%), opening para-ostial (88%), pseudo-ostial (13%), morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium lateral, cauda bent tubular.
