Macrodon atricauda (Günther, 1880)

(Sciaenidae, Perciformes)

Distribui-se da Venezuela até a Argentina. É uma espécie costeira. Encontrada em fundos de areia e lama, em profundidades de até 60 m. Ocorre também em aguas estuarinas, especialmente os jovens. Alcança 45 cm de comprimento e alimenta-se principalmente de camarões e peixes pequenos (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Soares et al.; 2008).

Shape: oblong. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: rounded (69%), oblique-round (31%). Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (62%), sinuate (35%), entire (4%). Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate (54%), lobed (35%), lobed to entire (12%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening pseudo-ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium rectangular, cauda bent tubular.
