Menticirrhus americanus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Ocorre da Flórida (Estados Unidos) até a Argentina. Encontrada em águas costeiras entre 15 e 85 m de profundidade e também em regiões estuarina, geralmente em fundos de lama e areia. Atinge 50 m de comprimento e alimenta-se de vermes e crustáceos de fundo (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Menezes et al., 2003).

Morphology:
Shape: bullet-shaped. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: oblique to peaked (65%), peaked-round (35%). Dorsal edge: entire (76%), sinuate to entire (24%). Ventral edge: entire (82%), sinuate to entire (18%). Profile: plane-convex (94%), concave-convex (6%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening pseudo-ostial (51%), para-ostial (49%), morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium lateral, cauda bent tubular.
