Ocorre no Atlântico Sul Ocidental, do Rio de Janeiro até 54°S, na Argentina. Atinge 1 m de comprimento. É uma espécie que habita o talude continental entre 50 e 500 m de profundidade. Alimenta-se de crustáceos pelágicos quando jovens e de peixes e lulas quando adultos (Figueiredo et al. 2002, Bernardes et al. 2005).

Morphology:
Shape: lanceolated to elliptic (89%), elliptic (11%). Anterior region: oblique-round (84%), oblique to angled-round (13%), oblique to peaked-round (3%). Posterior region: lanceolated-round (72%), lanceolated (17%), peaked-round (11%). Dorsal edge: lobed to sinuate (53%), lobed (47%). Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate (49%), sinuate to entire (33%), lobed (9%), sinuate (7%). Profile: plane-convex (70%), flattened (30%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: absent (80%), underdeveloped (20%). Antirostrum: absent (81%), underdeveloped (19%). Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal (95%), slightly ascending (5%), opening mesial (92%), pseudo-ostial (8%), morphology homosulcoid, colliculum homomorphic, ostium elliptic, cauda elliptic.
