Distribui-se do sul da Florida (Estados Unidos) ao sul do Brasil. Ocorre em fundos de areia e lama na região litorânea, principalmente em praias arenosas. Exemplares jovens são abundantes em águas rasas, mas não são comuns em estuários. Atinge 45 cm de comprimento e alimenta-se de peixes e invertebrados bentônicos (camarões) (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980).

Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation ascending, opening pseudo-ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium lateral, cauda markedly curved tubular.
