Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823)
(Sciaenidae, Perciformes)
Ocorre das Antilhas e América Central (Costa Rica) até a Argentina. Encontrada em fundos de lama e areia, até 100 m de profundidade. Os jovens usam águas estuarinas para alimentação e crescimento. Alcança 60 cm de comprimento. Alimenta-se de poliquetas e crustáceos da infauna (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Bernardes et al., 2005; Soares et al.; 2008).

Morphology:
Shape: pyriform. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (55%), entire (27%), sinuate to irregular (18%). Ventral edge: entire (82%), sinuate to entire (18%). Profile: biconvex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: not applicable. Rostrum: absent. Antirostrum: absent. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening pseudo-ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium , cauda strongly curved tubular.
