Naucrates ductor (Linnaeus, 1758)

(Carangidae, Perciformes)

Circuntropical, no Atlântico ocidental ocorre da Nova Escócia até o norte da Argentina. Habita águas afastadas da costa e chega a atingir 70 cm. Alimenta-se de restos de animais e também de ectoparasitas dos animais que acompanha (cações, raias e outros peixes de pequeno porte, bem como tartarugas). Os jovens associam-se a medusas e algas (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980).

Shape: hourglass. Anterior region: notched. Posterior region: notched. Dorsal edge: sinuate. Ventral edge: sinuate. Profile: plane-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: Developed. Pseudoantirostrum: underdeveloped. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostiocaudal, morphology pseudo-archaesulcoid, colliculum homomorphic, ostium absent, cauda absent.
