Oligoplites saliens (Bloch, 1793)

(Carangidae, Perciformes)

Distribui-se de Honduras ao Uruguai e vive em águas costeiras, próximo à superfície. Atinge pouco mais de 50 cm de comprimento. É a espécie mais comum do gênero no sudeste do Brasil (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic to lanceolated (65%), hourglass (33%), lanceolated (2%). Anterior region: lanceolated-round (65%), notched (33%), lanceolated (2%). Posterior region: oblique to angled (36%), notched (33%), oblique-round (32%). Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (67%), sinuate (33%). Ventral edge: sinuate (53%), sinuate to entire (47%). Profile: concave-convex (96%), plane-convex (4%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in disagreement (93%), in agreement (7%). Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed (77%), underdeveloped (23%). Pseudorostrum: absent (48%), underdeveloped (28%), Developed (24%). Pseudoantirostrum: absent (48%), underdeveloped (35%), Developed (17%). Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostial (50%), ostiocaudal (50%), morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum absent, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular (82%), strongly curved tubular (15%), straight tubular (3%).
