A sardinha-bandeira distribui-se desde a Nova Inglaterra até a Argentina, ocorrendo em águas superficiais e costeiras. Atinge, em média, 30 cm de comprimento. Alimenta-se de pequenos peixes, crustáceos e copépodes (FIGUEIREDO e MENEZES, 1978; FROESE e PAULY, 2013).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic to lanceolated (98%), elliptic (2%). Anterior region: lanceolated (98%), peaked (2%). Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (56%), sinuate (25%), entire (14%), lobed to sinuate (6%). Ventral edge: dentate to entire (47%), dentate to sinuate (30%), lobed to sinuate (22%), sinuate to entire (2%). Profile: concave-convex (94%), flattened (6%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement (68%), in disagreement (32%). Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal (92%), slightly ascending (8%), opening ostial, morphology pseudo-archaesulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular (78%), elliptic (22%).
