Pellona harroweri (Fowler, 1919)

Conhecida como sardinha-manteiga, P. harroweri distribui-se do Panamá ao Rio Grande do Sul. É uma espécie de pequeno porte e chega a atingir 16 cm de comprimento. Sua ocorrência é comum em praias e estuários (FIGUEIREDO e MENEZES, 1978). É zooplanctófaga, alimentando-se principalmente de camarões, copépodos e peixes muito pequenos (SOARES et al., 2008; MUTO et al., 2008; CRIÁLES-HERNÁNDEZ, 2003).

Shape: elliptic. Anterior region: peaked. Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire. Ventral edge: dentate to entire. Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostial (94%), pseudo-ostial (6%), morphology pseudo-archaesulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium elliptic, cauda elliptic.
