Sardinella brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1879)

(Clupeidae, Clupeiformes)

A sardinha-verdadeira distribui-se no oceano Atlântico ocidental, desde o Golfo do México até a Argentina. Vive em águas costeiras e forma grandes cardumes, alimentando-se de organismos planctônicos. Atingem até 24 cm de comprimento (FROESE e PAULY, 2013; FIGUEIREDO e MENEZES, 1978).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic to lanceolated. Anterior region: lanceolated. Posterior region: oblique-round (95%), blunt-round (5%). Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (59%), lobed to sinuate (41%). Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate (51%), dentate to sinuate (16%), dentate to lobed (16%), sinuate to entire (14%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement (73%), in disagreement (27%). Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal (57%), slightly ascending (43%), opening ostial, morphology pseudo-archaesulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda round-oval (78%), elliptic (22%).
