Sarda sarda (Bloch. 1793)

(Scombridae, Perciformes)

Ocorre em águas tropicais e temperadas do Atlântico, do Mediterrâneo e Mar Negro. Na costa leste da América, distribui-se da Nova Escócia até a Argentina. Ultrapassa 90 cm de comprimento. Habita a superfície de águas costeiras e se alimenta de peixes pequenos, de lulas e camarões (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Bernardes et al., 2005).

Morphology:
Shape: triangular. Anterior region: peaked. Posterior region: oblique. Anterior dorsal edge: lobed to sinuate. Posterior dorsal edge: sinuate. Ventral edge: crenate to sinuate. Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in disagreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation slightly ascending, opening ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda elliptic.
