Scomber japonicus Houttuyn, 1782

(Scombridae, Perciformes)

Habita águas quentes, ocorrendo em todos os mares. No Atlântico ocidental distribui-se desde a Nova Escócia a Argentina. Alcança 70 cm de comprimento, Apresenta hábitos costeiros, mas pode ser encontrada até em 300 m de profundidade. Alimenta-se de crustáceos, peixes e lulas. (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Figueiredo et al, 2002; Bernardes et al., 2005).

Morphology:
Shape: rectangular. Anterior region: peaked. Posterior region: oblique (68%), oblique-round (32%). Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (77%), entire (15%), sinuate (9%). Ventral edge: sinuate to entire (81%), entire (19%). Posterior edge: sinuate to entire (74%), entire (26%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: underdeveloped (85%), absent (11%), Developed (4%). Antirostrum: Developed (64%), underdeveloped (28%), absent (9%). Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostial (85%), ostiocaudal (15%), morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular (53%), strongly curved tubular (47%).
