Serranus auriga (Cuvier, 1829)

Distribui-se do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil) até a Argentina. Atinge 20 cm de comprimento e é encontrada desde 15 até 135 m de profundidade (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980. Alimento principal Brachyura e itens secundários Opiuroidea, Gammaridea. Poliqueta, Cumacea e Teleostei (Soares et al.,1993).

Morphology:
Shape: fusiform. Anterior region: peaked-round. Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: sinuate to entire (50%), entire (35%), sinuate (11%), lobed to sinuate (4%). Ventral edge: sinuate to entire (63%), entire (17%), lobed to sinuate (11%), sinuate (9%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: absent (72%), underdeveloped (28%). Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position median, orientation horizontal, opening ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular.
