Selene setapinnis (Mitchill, 1815)

(Carangidae, Perciformes)

Ocorre no Atlântico ocidental desde a Nova Escócia até o norte da Argentina. Espécie costeira, atinge 40cm de comprimento. Vive próximo ao fundo, formando cardumes. Indivíduos de pequeno e médio porte são comuns em áreas rasas de baias e estuários. Alimenta-se de pequenos peixes e crustáceos (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980; Figueiredo et al, 2002).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic (72%), elliptic to rectangular (17%), rectangular (10%). Anterior region: peaked-round (62%), rounded (38%). Posterior region: angled-round (48%), rounded (28%), flattened (24%). Dorsal edge: sinuate (52%), lobed to sinuate (31%), sinuate to entire (17%). Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate (59%), sinuate (41%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: Developed. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position supramedian, orientation horizontal (72%), descending (28%), opening ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum absent, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular (55%), strongly curved tubular (45%).
