Distribui-se de Massachusetts (EUA) até a Argentina. Alcança 50 cm de comprimento. É comum no sudeste do Brasil, principalmente em aguas rasas de praias desprotegidas. Alimenta-se de invertebrados de pequeno porte (Menezes & Figueiredo, 1980).

Morphology:
Shape: spindle-shaped. Anterior region: rounded. Posterior region: rounded. Dorsal edge: sinuate to irregular. Ventral edge: crenate to irregular (50%), crenate (50%). Profile: concave-convex. Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: Developed. Antirostrum: underdeveloped. Pseudorostrum: absent. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position supramedian, orientation horizontal, opening ostial, morphology heterosulcoid, colliculum heteromorphic, ostium funnel-like, cauda slightly curved tubular.
